A language-learning app concept made for busy people

An app interface I designed for a concept called “genten”. genten is a language-learning app that’s built upon the stress point that many people simply don’t have the time to be learning a new language. Everybody learns differently, so ideally a language-learning app should reflect this in the ability to conform to the user’s life, not the other way around. The name comes from the Sino-Japanese word genten (原点), or “starting point”.

Conceptual Features:

  • User account for logging in and saving progress
    • Edit course composition of vocabulary, grammar, and culture
      • Control studying structure between learning and practicing
      • Control length of lessons and study sessions
      • Control frequency of lessons and study sessions
      • Edit which days of the week the app wants the user to study and practice

I created this project using Figma and Artboard Studio’s Figma plugin to create phone mockups of the final result. The course can be customized for each language the user is learning, and the user can choose how frequently they expect to study in a week’s period, as well as which days they can study. They can also adjust the type of content they will receive throughout the course.

What I was able to learn from this project:

      • Incorporate user accessibility features into the design elements
        • Design an app with a much more fleshed out system for extreme customization options
          • Develop use-case scenarios and target audience
          • Research key design elements found in leading language-learning apps
          • Find stress points found within language-learning apps as well as other language-learning methods

          idle hands

An app concept I made to help pass time during the long rides on the subway

“idle hands” is an offline app that serves to simply entertain the user for the duration of their train ride. It was an idea that came to me while on the train because I was frustrated by the dropping of internet connections for minutes at a time.

          Conceptual Features:

          • Download articles prior to train ride
            • Access downloaded articles offline
          • Piano keyboard
            • Save and access recordings
          • Drawing mode
            • Limited colors
            • Save and access drawings

This is my first project done using Figma to create a wireframe for the app concept. I used Adobe Illustrator to create the iconography for the four modes at the bottom, as well as the save icon.

What I was able to learn from this project:

          • Become familiar with Figma’s software
            • Design an app with the challenge of only implementing only the bare minimum
              • Develop use-case scenarios and target audience
